Hagar Shipley is at the end of her life. A touch tenacious woman, of sturdy pioneer stock, this book finds her uncompromising in her demeanor,
even as her body lets her spirit down. As her life begins to be revealed to the reader, it becomes evident that this is a story and a literary work
which embody all of those classical literary elements of foreshadowing, theme, plot, setting and symbolism. The title of the book works on
several levels. As the opening quotation shows, when her son died, that part of her that showed emotion, died as well. She became stone. The last part of the title:
Angel, comes into play as the reader realizes that Hagar is getting ready to die. We are told that she has dementia of a kind and more than likely, based
on her symptoms she has cancer. Soon, Hagar will be an angel. But, since she is such a tough old bird, difficult to those trying to care for her, it
is evident that she is a stone angel(Richards). The Stone Angel reference may also refer to the statues one sees in graveyards.
