their lives were not marred by the death of their loved ones. The threat of AIDS is a serious one, and if the average American feels that the threat only
applies to other countries, he had better think again. This disease is no respecter of boundaries, nationalities, gender or age, and as such even impacts international relations on a large
scale. In the early eighties, two French scientists successfully identified an, as of yet unheard of virus. This virus, called HIV, attacked the bodys immune system and caused a lowered
resistance to other types of diseases, and gave rise to Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome. But identifying the disease and curing it are two different things. The good news is that
significant strides have been made in the area of research and now through the use of combinations of drugs, those infected with HIV may not develop full blown AIDS. HIV
is transmitted via a fluid solution, usually saliva, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk or blood(Stine, 2001). The main ways that this can occur is via sharing needles, sexual contact, blood
transfusions, transplants or getting infected fluid into an open wound, states Dr. Gerald Stine in his book, AIDS Update 2002. To date, the most popular form of treatment is a
combination of anti-AIDS drugs, including AZT. Representative Tom Lantos testified before a Congressional hearing in December 2001 in order to report the findings of a global study involving the
topic of AIDS and HIV worldwide. His report was at once shocking and frightening. His major purpose was to convince Congressmen that intervention and involvement in the world health arena
