which the American journalist and broadcast companies could sink. Paul Thaler in his book, THE SPECTCLE: MEDIA AND THE MAKING OF THE O. J. SIMPSON STORY, chronicles the ethical and
moral dilemmas faced by the journalists and broadcast companies assigned to cover the OJ Simpson trial. Paul Thaler, who is the Director of Journalism at Mercy College, contends as
his central argument that the media shaped the publics perceptions of the OJ Simpson case and, worse yet, the trial. "And it couldnt have happened without the camera in the
court"(Thaler 15). That the presence of cameras in the courtroom moved already egregious behavior to all new lows is supported by the evidence which Thaler presents. However, as one source
of contention with the work, one must state that at times Thaler tends to make generalized claims that anyone with a bit of a background in law will know for
a conundrum. The fact is, he offers, that the trend in televising courtroom battles has been to increasingly offer more and more sensationalized coverage of cases. He contends
that the "soul of the American courtroom has been traded for what we perceive as progress and enhanced freedom"(Thaler 15). In this his evidence utilized is a bit flimsy and
in some respects hypocritical. He speaks about the evils of the industry but does not specifically point out what evils were media related and what discrepancies were of the type
that always show up in a trial. In fact, what seems more likely is that Thaler had a great idea to expose the media frenzy that fed on the
limelight that was the OJ Simpson Trial, but in the end, because of his own positions and biases was unable to complete the mission. As a journalist, himself, it seems
