life from the perspective of the men, which has been done, but goes a step further to present the Spartan lifestyle from a females perspective. Hughes serves to show that
this in not merely a recapping of past information, but that there continues to be discoveries about this interesting culture in the modern era.
This series is broken into three episodes. The first episode covers the unique beginnings of the Spartan society, where it came from and why it developed as
it did. The second episode portrays Sparta as it compares to Athens, particularly in their views toward women. The last episode deals with apex of Spartan civilization and its ultimate
demise. Episode one opens in the lush scenery of the Peloponnesian area. Sparta was known for its fighters, and its ability
to make the most of their environment and resources. Their civilization did not boast the same types of advances culturally, such as philosophers, playwrights or artists, but nonetheless, their eye
for architecture and military prowess were second to none. The first episode speaks primarily to some of the beliefs of
the culture, which included infanticide and euthanasia, practices which most balk at in the modern era. Slave labor is utilized and the government employs a secret police which maintain a
strict order among the villagers. Children are not protected nor babied, but are expected to be survivors and fighters, regardless of gender.
