for a she-wolf who nursed them and raised them. She kept them alive and in doing so allowed them to eventually fulfill the prophecy and their destiny. These legends formed
the basis for many of todays classic works of art. Such is the case of the She-wolf of the Capital. At sometime around 500 BC an artist rendered the
famous legend of the founders of Rome: Remus and Romulus. It was carved out of bronze and is over thirty inches high(Rammage 2000). What is interesting about this particular sculpture
is that the she-wolf has been dated to an earlier period than that of the infants under her. The infants were added during the Renaissance period whereas the wolf is
considered to have come from the Etruscan Period(Hodge 2003). Therefore there is no known author or artist for this work. Considering that perhaps the earlier figures were damaged or
lost, stolen or destroyed, this would explain the later dating on the infants. In the end, however, as it is displayed today, the She-Wolf at the Capitol is highly revered
as a symbol of the founding of Rome. As such, on can see in its construction a bit of the ideologies of the society which created it. What one
can deduce from a study of the dark sculpture is that the Romans considered themselves to be of supernatural abilities and as such granted extraordinary strength. Indeed, many of the
legends which revolve around the two boys include wrestling matches which rival those of the gods. Thus, one can infer that the Romans believed themselves to be chosen by the
