Does it serve a purpose? Is it really the glue that holds together many relationships? In many respects one can see where this might be the case. Richard Dawkins
in his book, The Selfish Gene believes that every living thing is created to serve its genetic components and to ensure that these genes have ample opportunity to propagate. We
are "robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes"(Dawkins). Robert Wright seconds Dawkins thoughts on this in his book, The Moral Animal, stating that selfishness is
the reason that behaviors and certain traditions exist, that these selfish routines and rituals are designed with one purpose in mind: get our genes into the next generation. He says,
"What is in our genes best interest is what seems right-morally right, objectively right, whatever sort of rightness is in order"(Wright). Both of these authors are what are known
as evolutionary psychologists. As such, they believe that behavior and morality have the underlying purpose of propagating and preserving the gene pool. These authors and other scientists like them believe
that mankind is hardwired for selfishness and are a slave to these drives whether we understand or are cognizant of them in the first place. One can see this
in a hypothetical example of why two people decide to get married in the first place. Most people get married because they can see themselves living happily and comfortably with
