a millennium. But was Western Europe similar to its Roman Ruler? Or were there differences that revealed themselves even as the Roman Empire began to crack, crumble and ultimately fall?
In this paper, well examine some of the literature that discusses these points, and come to a determination if there were definite
differences between Western Europe and Rome, though the land was pretty much under a single rule. Overview Though there are vast amounts
of literature dealing with the Roman Empire, the Carolingian dynasties and Medieval Europe, it would be helpful for us here to examine the Roman Empire, why it was created, and
what it encompassed. Known as the Empire in the West and the Holy Roman Empire in turn, the Roman Empire, in
its entirety, was a political entity in western Europe from 800 until its dissolution in 1806 (Microsoft Encarta, 1994). The Holy Roman
Empire was Romes attempt to revive the Western Roman Empire, which was dissolving and being replaced by independent kingdoms in the German states, following the deposition of Romulus Augustulus in
