knowledge-based. Certainly, manufacturing companies continue to pump out goods, and people continue to buy them. But the true collateral these days is less an ability to stand at an assembly
line, and more the ability to provide a needed service to the public. Given this, it can be said that Taylorism, and its application to organizations, is irrelevant in the
modern context. In theory, this statement could probably be refuted. Taylorism, which tends to favor a centralized, hierarchical approach, has its uses.
By delegating certain tasks to certain "service people," efficiencies are certainly achieved and more can be accomplished. After all, call centers seem to do just fine under Taylorism. But the
problem with call centers is the fact that they have high rates of turnover because of the mind-numbing aspects of Taylorism. At call centers, individuals are responsible for making a
certain number of calls during a certain period of time. If they dont make those calls, theyre docked, or in some way are punished. This type of stress tends to
drive employees into other jobs. In this paper, were taking the position that this statement would be true in the service industry.
This is because in the service sector, businesses are not dealing with tangible products, but rather, are dealing with customers who have varying and differing needs. An Overview of
