(exampling the seven deadly sins) have given ample material for serious study. In this play, the very characters take on new dimensions as facets of these deadly sins. Given this,
then, the servants and the role of servitude takes on a whole new significance in Christopher Marlowes Doctor Faustus. The play of Dr. Faustus is the story of a man
who quickly descends from that of a gifted intellectual to that of a despot and wreck. He literally sells his soul to the devil for more and more knowledge. Through
the bulk of the play after each milestone is reached, he is not content but is goaded by Mephistopheles to continue on in his downward spiral. Having made his decision
to follow this path, he tests its strength by raising and commanding a being called Mephistopheles to do his bidding. As he becomes more adept the more the audience sees
a change come over the doctor, until he is totally seduced with what he feels is his own power and abilities. However, in order to proceed any further, he is
told that he will have to sign a contract or pact with the devil. This Faustus does, convinced that even he can become greater than the devil and certainly will
become more clever. The townspeople find out about his delving in the black arts and they confront him. Before Faustus can show the whole town the extent of his powers,
his time is up and the demons appear to carry him away to hell where he is to be eternally damned. The largest theme that comes from this
