shape media as media shapes democracy, and theres some truth to this particular comment. But in this day and age, as most
of us continue to be inundated with news, information and other things from various sources, what role does media play in our society? What role has it played in the
modern society, and what role does it continue to play in post-modern society? Before discussing the media role in these two times,
lets first define what they are. According to Veith (1995), modernism came about beginning with the Enlightenment of the 18th century, and
ending around the middle of the 20th century. Modernism was scientific and unified, where vague theories could be put to the test and could come out with hard, convincing truth
(Veith, 1995). Progress was the name of the game, and progress would help society, if society worked together (Veith, 1995). Modernists believed that science would solve an problems, both social
and otherwise -- and that rational planning, technology and social manipulation would "engineer the perfect society" (Veith, 1995). Veith points out that
post-modern, on the other hand, is the falling apart of modernism; a time during which skepticism about tried and true ways falls out of control (especially when it comes to
scientific fact), society becomes weary and disillusioned and the idea that truth isnt so much a discovery, but rather, its a construction. Truth, in a postmodern society, pretty much rests
