for the companys incorrect balance sheets and financial strategies ended up with the companys CEO, Kenneth Lay. Rather than standing up and acknowledging blame for the disastrous accounting fiasco, Lay
professed not to have known what was going on. While awful for the companys several thousand employees that were let go and
had no severance or even pension fund left, Enron provides an interesting study of how a leader created an unhealthy organization. If Lay truly didnt know what was going on,
that was bad -- it shows he was oblivious and out-of-touch with his organization. But if he did know what was going on, that was worse -- it showed that
he not only deliberately lied about his part in the debacle, but deliberately defrauded his employees, the very people who worked for him. But as examination of some of Enrons
practices came out, it was found that this was an organizational culture that was thoroughly ill, from its upper management to the traders, who had few scruples when it came
to what they did. Though some Enron cases rise to the top and cause headline scandals, fortunately, most organizational leaders and their
cultures arent quite so extreme. Still, an organizations leader can set the tone for an organizations health. The leader who has a vision, who is willing to share it with
his/her employees, and who has a plan on how to reach that vision so all can benefit is the leader who ends up presiding over a healthy organization. Management and
