socialist society, however, laws tend to be more "caretaking" types of rules - in other words, theyre applied to protect people from hurting themselves. One of these laws involves anti-smoking
bans because of second-hand smoke. In a capitalist society, a rule like this would never be invoked, because a capitalist society recognizes that if people dont care to eat in
smoke-filled restaurants, they have the right to not do so. But a society veering toward socialism will pass such a ban to protect society in spite of itself.
The difficult with such rules, however, is that they end up being slippery slopes. Once the laws are passed banning smoking in restaurants, they
can also pass laws banning certain foods (which some cities already have done). What is the role of government in a purely free market system?
The role of government in a purely free market, capitalistic system is to protect the homeland from hostile forces and, in some cases, to provide
