are explored in August Wilsons plays, Fences, and Joe Turners Come and Gone. Fences is a tale about two men named Troy and Bono. They are African Americans who
work for the sanitation department. They are disgruntled because they dont get to drive the trash truck, but are only permitted to lift the trash into the truck. The audience
learns that Troy was at one time part of the Negro league but lost his opportunity to play when the new rules limited the age of the players in the
Major leagues. Now, his son, Cory, has been recruited by a college football team. Meanwhile, the audience learns that Troys wife, Rose, has asked Troy to build a fence in
the yard. While Troy and Cory are working on the fence in the backyard, Cory tells his father that he has quit his job at the local grocery so
that he can focus on being recruited by a scout who will be making an appearance at the game. Troy loses his temper and makes Cory go get his job
back. Later, Troy tells the coach that Cory is through wasting his life on a game. It is clear that the ghosts which haunt Troys past are influencing his dealings
with his son. The audience is given a clue into this recurring nightmare that haunts Troy as the references that Troy uses when he argues with Cory include the
lines strike one. Strike two comes when Cory breaks up a fight between his mother and his father. Just as Troy is about to strike Rose, Cory stops him. Strike
three comes when Troy decides to throw Cory out of the house to fend for himself. The tensions have become intolerable between the two and it is clear that confrontations
