The Rocking Horse Winner, is the story of a family who have been living beyond their means. The walls whisper that there must be more money coming into the home,
and, determined to prove to his mother that he is not unlucky like his father, Paul supernaturally begins the attempt to change their fate. But was Paul actually lucky? Paul
is a little boy growing up in the shadow of World War I. The war is over and post war London is attempting to pick up the pieces. Appearances are
everything and Pauls family have a difficult time presenting a good face. This is because they are destitute as many were after the war. Most families pulled together and made
the best of things during this time. For most, the luckiest thing was that they had all survived the war and had each others love. But, for Paul, and his
family, there was no love, only luck. And they were fresh out of that. Paul begins to understand at an early age that something is different about his family. His
mother is cold and unflinching in their social position in the town. Paul asks why they must use their Uncles car or take a taxi and his mother replies that
they are poor because they have no luck. Paul, being a small child, thinks that luck is a tangible object to be found, obtained or won. It is only later
that he begins to understand that luck, like love is not so easily found or kept. Paul begins to hear the very walls in his house whisper that there must
be more money. Thinking that he can draw his mothers love to him if he has luck, Paul attempts to find out how to bring luck to himself. His
