This is assuming, of course, that an employee is fortunate enough to have an employer willing to spend money on health care. No matter who shoulders the burden of health care costs, however, the numbers are pretty shocking. During 2007, the United States spent $2 trillion a year on its health care system -- representing 50 percent more per capita than any other nation (Pellet 52). Its ironic that the one nation that doesnt have subsidized health care provided by the government should be paying so much in for health care costs, yet have so little to show for it. For every piece of medical technology used to prolong a life, thousands go uninsured or die because theyre under-insured for treatment. The U.S. medical system is definitely out of whack, and needs a great deal of overhaul. But to do this, its important to understand what is contributing to the rising costs of health care in the United States. On the surface, its easy to point fingers, to blame the money-hungry doctors and hospitals who have no problems charging a patient three dollars for an aspirin tablet. Its also easy to point the finger at Big Pharma, the collection of pharmaceutical companies that seem to be having a good time creating drugs for symptoms that dont even exist, or that exist in a small fraction of the population.
