that there are darker aspects to being a child, the movie, Billy Eliot seeks to bring for many themes relating to the innate gift of youth: hope. Toward that end,
Billy Eliot makes a substantial commentary about childhood and its ability to make dreams come true. A quick summary of the movie shows a hard-working mining family who are going
through hard times. Billys mother has died, leaving he and his brother to be raised by their gruff but loving father. The miners have begun a strike which further escalates
the poverty in the region. Billys father, hardened by lifes experiences, wants to protect his sons. He believes the only way to do that is to make them physically tough
and mentally unemotional. His outlook on life is a total contrast to Billys outlook. Believing that Billy needs to be toughened up Billys father enrolls him in a boxing class
which meets after school. Ironically enough, it is this move which brings him in contact with Mrs. Wilkinson and her ballet class. At first, Billys interest is not in
the dancing, but in one particular dancer, a girl in the class. He attempts to take the class at first in order to meet this girl, but in doing so,
finds that he has a natural talent for it. It is as if the emotional side of him which has been forced to remain silent finally has a voice. The
conflict in the story begins to tighten and rise when Billys father finds out about Billy taking the dancing classes. He loudly forbids Billy to attend any more classes. But,
by this time Billy has fallen in love with the art form. He understands that this may be his one chance to live a different life than that of a
