of data throughout the organization to help that organization improve its effectiveness. Given that information is such an important part of an organization,
its somewhat surprising that organizational leaders dont approach IT in a thoughtful way. Rather, many organizational leaders see the newest IT trend in some magazine (or at a conference), authorize
the spending of thousands of dollars to get the hardware and software installed, then scratch their heads when it doesnt improve efficiency, effectiveness or productivity. This is because these organizational
leaders didnt consider the organizations strategies, goals or mission statements when it came to effectively implementing their IT initiatives. As such, there is a direct connection between an effective IT
plan and an organizations goals, objectives and mission. Organizations that encompass information technology and its systems based on their missions and goals tend
to have better outcomes - rather than spending a lot of money (not to mention wasted time and effort) on the latest IT fad, these organizations are focused on IT
as an enhancement of their mission. An organizations mission, first and foremost, is its purpose for being - the reason why its in existence. Data collection, storage and dissemination needs
