that time produces, people forget that extreme violence before, during and even after war has been happening for centuries. As the world has just been through a serious confrontation and
short, but intense, war, it leaves one wondering if an escalation in violence is indicative of a countrys readiness to go to war. What is the overall relationship between war
and violence and must they necessarily co-exist? Stephen Crane, who was a writer at the turn of the century, noticed this phenomenon in regard to war. He was seemingly sickened
by the propaganda which sent excited young men, seeking fame and glory, into the reality of death and destruction. Much like a lamb to the slaughter, Crane suggested that the
perspective of war be shown for what it is: ugly. Heroism, in his opinion, is a false promise, as depicted in his short story, A Mystery of Heroism. Crane
seems to view violence in war as senseless and avoidable. The grim reality of war is driven home to his title character in A Mystery of Heroism. Fred Collins, a
union soldier in the Civil War, has joined the war for all the wrong reasons, it can be said. During a particularly heated battle, a few of his friends and
he, dare each other to brave the open battlefield to gain access to a well on the other side. "Thunder! I wisht I had a drink. Aint there any
water around here?"(Crane 1). Caving in to the taunts and encouragement of his buddies, he miraculously makes it to the well. As he stands there, celebrating his small triumph,
he dubs himself a hero. But what has he really won? As the truth dawns on him, Fred realizes that the idea of heroism is a lie. A man is
