understanding any human is to simply study them in their natural surroundings. Given this, then, one might gain just as great a perspective on the socio-cultural aspects of behavior, simply by studying a group of people in a physical environment, such as the local laundry mat. The Fifth Street Wash-a-teria is located on the corner of two inner city intersections. The demographic range seems to range from lower to middle income, mostly minority. The gender fluctuates with the time of day, and the age of the subjects range from nineteen to seventy years of age. The building itself is well-lit, though somewhat aged in appearance. Large front windows look out onto the busy intersection of fifth and they are the only windows in the large open area where the washers and dryers are. There are two counters; one at the entrance and one at the back of the building for dry cleaning purposes. As one enters the building the temperature is always elevated, possibly because of the use of the commercial dryers. Oscillating fans attempt to circulate the air. The heavy smell of fabric softener and detergent scents the air. In the middle of the washing area is a series of furniture groupings; long, licorice-black, fake vinyl couch, two matching chairs and a three legged coffee table. A coffee pot sits in the corner along with Styrofoam cups and a help yourself sign underneath of it. In the middle of this section is an area of long wooded tables, about three feet tall, where people sort and fold their laundry. The far side of this center are vending machines which offer various junk food delicacies and additional bottles, boxes and disks of detergents, stain blockers and personal hygiene products.
