of the individual, just waiting for the right set of triggering events. In order to obtain an understanding of an era, one must not become encapsulated by only studying paintings from a period. Rather, one can gain a better perspective by studying all the forms of art during the time, including literature and music. The artists who created their works during the Realist Period had a great deal to say about the world around them, but in particular about the world within, in slice of life fashion. Edouard Manet painted some of the most widely admired, critically discovered, and revered paintings of the nineteenth century. It can be said that his unconventional way of perceiving things had an impact on the art world and on future generations of artists. His paintings seem to hint at the fact that consciousness itself is the greatest subject of his art. This can readily be seen in his groundbreaking piece titled: Olympia. In departing from the staid and true realms of the modern art world at the time, he also brought harsh criticism onto himself. The painting Olympia was not of a Romanesque goddess or of a ethereal nymph frolicking in the forest glade. Instead, this was a realistic depiction of a woman, nude, reclining on a chaise lounger. This can be said to have rocked the art world. Olympia, painted in 1863, and subjected to harsh criticism, upset Manet (Eisenmann, 1996). In his book, Nineteenth Century Art: A Critical History, Eisenman alludes to the fact that Manets intent was not really to shock the art world, but rather to show art from a different perspective.
