this declaration with more than a bit of amusement when one considers that this play is one of the most cleverly constructed satires of our time, and indeed seems to
have more substance than the author of the aforementioned statement. Perhaps the speaker missteps and mistakes the irony and the pure farce of the play for nothing more than a
lark on stage. And, in reality, Inspector Hound does not set out to solve the worlds greatest ills. But rather, in the role of most great art and literature, it
examines, with great sport, The British Murder Mystery, and on a deeper level, what gives rise to all great comedies. In the traditional comedy, the main characters are introduced and
the impending situations are set into motion. In essence, the characters want something and it becomes apparent why the object of their desire (be it love or money, power or
fame) will be difficult to obtain. In Inspector Hound, two theatre critics are reviewing a play. But, the play is the furthest thing from their minds. One critic is romantically
frustrated, while the other is full of his own self-importance. Inspector Hound, itself, is a play within a play and the real focus of the play is not on the
cheesy play that the critics are reviewing, but the critics themselves. This, too, is perhaps what the statement is referring to. The next convention is that of a rising
action or a compounding series of events. Birdboot, upset at the ringing of an onstage phone which no one seems to be answering, sets the conflict in action as he
