were involved in some facet of the campaign. Graham Greene, an author with a keen sense of foreboding wrote this book before the conflict with Vietnam heated up. On one
level it is the story of a love triangle, but on a deeper level it illustrates a most profound commentary on todays political schemes. Most authors when they write
a book, whether they are conscious of it or not, place a bit of themselves in each of their characters. Likewise each character tends to illustrate some facet of point
of view of the author. In Greenes case he utilizes the main characters to make a statement about Vietnam and Americas involvement in the war. Alden Pyle works for
the government in special-ops. His main goal is to go into an area, make contact, turn any indigenous personnel that he can to the American side and begin a counter
revolution inside of a country which is leaning toward communism. His mission would have been cut and dried except that life is seldom cut and dried. Pyle falls in
love. To be specific, Pyle falls in love with a Vietnamese woman who at the time is the intimate of a war correspondent named Fowler. Here, of course are
all the players in the love triangle. But, they are also more than that. All three characters embody some of the ideology that was prevalent before, during and after the
conflict. Pyle is an idealist. He wholeheartedly buys the party line that he has been sold. In many ways he is an innocent because he does not stop to
think of the ramifications of his actions as having any other outcome but a good one. This was how many politicians of the day saw the armed conflict with Vietnam.
