the monster that Frankenstein creates is not only the physical representation which emerges, but also the monster in himself. The creation of the monster by Victor Frankenstein follows both a literal and figurative process which can be seen in his initial desire to create, then his acquisition of the parts, then the actual process of bringing them to life. Victors desire to create a human being in a laboratory stems from his earlier experiences both with death and the works of many scientists who had contemplated the same endeavor. What makes it even more alluring to Victor is that his father has declared these scientists work as trash. However, since Victor identifies with these men of science and shares their same desire to understand the intimate secrets of nature, he disregards his fathers proclamation. Thus the process is begun. Next, Victor begins to study the human form, how it moves, how it is held together. He determines that in order to understand life he must study death. To that end, then, he begins to rummage through graveyards and dissecting cadavers. What seems to still elude him at this point is what motivates or animates the body. Then, when observing a thunderstorm, it comes to him that it must come from electricity. But first, he must fashion a body. The proportions of Victors creation is important to the story. He was obviously a man of great intelligence. He understood what the right proportions ought to be, but he declines to make a man that is of normal proportions. He wants something bigger and better, in essence, attempting to improve upon Gods creations.
