definition, however, what is not evident in the definition is that, while social control is necessary, it is prone to abuses by those in power. Jeffery Reimans book, The
Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison, examines this idea, showing that social control has a dark side. The experts debate at
length as to the extent which social order is coercive and to what extent it is cooperative. Do those in power really call the shots? The answer would seem to
be more complex than a simple yes or no. Consider that Gandhi convinced thousands to formally protest against rules which were viewed as being unjust. Thus, those who were in
