there would be a whole host of problems the likes of which this society is not equipped to deal with. The subject of prostitution raises problems relating to human rights,
gender discrimination and criminal issues. Many women chose prostitution because they have no other economic recourse. For one reason or another their ability to provide for themselves has been severely
hampered or their ability to obtain education, which would elevate their situation, is non-existent. For many it is a matter of survival and once they have entered the business of
the sex industry, they are often too enmeshed to pull themselves out of it. In many ways, because of the lack of regulation or standardized criteria, prostitution is a very
prevalent form of gender abuse. Women have come such a long way in terms of human and civil rights that many researchers predict that legalizing prostitution would set womens rights
on its proverbial civic ear. Viewing women as sexual playthings would only encourage the base perception that womens rights advocates have fought for centuries. Secondly, the image that it would
reinforce in young girls minds is too tragic to consider. Already the media images compel young girls and teens to conform to impossible standards of beauty. What might the visual
availability of prostitutes do to influence the young? Donna Hughes, a leading researcher on this phenomenon, states, "Above all, state bodies and non-governmental organizations should understand that prostitution is a
demand market created by men who buy and sell womens sexuality for their own profit and pleasure,"(Hughes, 2002). Therefore, she says, "Legal reforms should create remedies that assist victims and
prosecute perpetrators"(Hughes, 2002). In fact, in Russia where the prostitution rates have soared over the last decade, the diseases have soared, as have the economically devastated areas of Africa. HIV
