However, Machiavelli, considered himself a student of the political systems of his day, and as such undertook the immense task of creating a noble primer of sorts for the prince coming to power. Of course, it should be mentioned that Machiavelli did not write this book depicting politics as they should be, but rather as things were at the time. That one shouldnt strive for better is insinuated, but with the reality of the throne, comes great responsibility, he seems to have felt, and so Machiavelli believed that difficult choices are sometimes made by the ruling monarch on behalf of his less knowledgeable subjects. There were several basic principals that Machiavelli put forth for his new princes-to-be. First, he states that there are five ways in which one might come to power and each should be weighed for its future consequences. The ways in which one comes to power would be through the favor of the existing monarchy. He also mentions luck, complete evil, and favor of fellow citizens. Once on the throne a Prince will have enormous power. But how does he keep this power? Machiavelli addresses this topic by stating that the Prince should control the power by always portraying an image of strength. He states that the Prince should have an opinion and a position on everything. He states that a Prince should not be abusive of his power, nor should he be hesitant to use it, if necessary.
