Because demand is so linked to price, it is mainly pictured in graphs as a "negative slope," as it rises and falls with prices. Yet not all increase in demand is linked to falling prices. In some cases, demand can have a positive slope - in other words, demand for a particular god or service can rise as the price for that good or service increases. While this may seem somewhat counter to the standard theory of price demand, there are several factors behind a product exhibiting a positive slope demand curve. For one thing, if a product or service is linked to a consumers status (and that status is one of wealth), the consumer doesnt mind paying higher prices. In fact, he or she would be concerned if the price was lower (Corneo and Olivier 1994). This is why many arts companies can get away with raising the prices of the so-called "gold circle" seating - because they know that to theater-goers or opera-goers, the tickets arent so much to see the show as they are to demonstrate their wealth.
