age One such book would be that of Javier Cercas, whose book Soldiers of Salamina has been taking the world by storm. And, yet, in his portrayal of the event,
there still seems to be a pervading overtone of prejudicial treatment of women. When one reads this book one is struck with the fact that when thousands of people were
annihilated in Hitlers war camps it became part of the legend of survival. It is studied in school books around the world. However, when thousands of people lost their lives
in the Spanish conflict, nothing was said. And, it has to be said, as discovered in this book, that even more people lost their lives after the Generalissimo Franco took
office. When Dictator Franco died in 1975 many believed that the silence would be broken, that the truth would be known. But, it has taken over twenty years hence
for the truth to come out. Cercas novel is ostensibly about a journalist in search of his identity. What he discovers is a buried past with more answers than he
is perhaps ready to face. What the journalist finds out is that the escape of a right wing leader does not result in the leaders execution. What unfolds is
a moment of truth for between the leader who escaped mass execution and a soldier who found him and was faced with a choice. By and large the treatment and
