are attempting to stand their ground in their attempt to win over or win back their audiences. The challenges which globalization has brought to countries around the world are myriad
and great. Russia, like so many other countries, are attempting to preserve culturally the integrity of their films as well as make box office money. One of the ways that
they are attempting to do this is to include sexuality in new and varying lights within the context of their movies. But sex is nothing new to Russian films. Since
the 1980s and Glasnost sexuality has been woven into most of the films released. However, prior to this time, the depiction of sex and sexuality had be covertly and indirectly
alluded to. Several films epitomize the changes which have happened since the Russian film industrys liberation. In the movie, Little Vera the use of sex
is that of a liberating vehicle with which Vera moves from one station of life to the next. In many ways this is a metaphor for Russia, herself. This film
was made in the late eighties and as such, then, the climate for change had been around for a while. Many changes were taking place and a sense of freedom
and destiny must have been in the air. Certainly the idea of freedom and destiny, of purpose and potential are embodied in the character of Vera.
Vera is representative of the new Russia. She lives for the moment, governed only by a sense of unbounded possibilities. This can be said to be synonymous with the
Russian people after so many centuries of domination and communist rule. Vera is tired of the rule of her parents and their outmoded ideas of morality. But not all of
