incumbent George H.W. Bush was invincible. Still riding high after the success of U.S. and coalition forces in Operation Desert Storm (which forced Iraq to draw back from its invasion
of Kuwait), Bush seemed a shoo-in for another four more years (Kagay, 1992). The Democrats were so convinced of this fact, that the more well-known candidates ceded the field to
unknown candidates such as Paul Tsongas (U.S. Senator from Massachusetts), Robert Casey (Governor of Pennsylvania) and Jerry Brown (the then-former Governor of California).
Then there was William Jefferson Clinton, Governor of Arkansas, whose claim to fame had been that of keynote speaker for the Democratic Convention in 1988 - but he didnt
leave behind a very good impression, as his speech was long, drawn-out and boring. At the beginning of 1992, he seemed a definite long shot to win much of anything.
However, he stuck it out and, positioning himself as the "New Democrat," did end up beating the field of contenders, despite attempts to smear his reputation through allegations of an
affair. He then went on to beat George H.W. Bush in the general election. The main slogan that drove his campaign? "Its the economy, stupid."
At the time of the election, the U.S. was in a recession with unemployment starting to tick upward. Clinton was able to focus on Bushs questionable domestic policies
(and Bushs seemingly being out of touch with the general population) and won victory based on promises to help turn the economy around.
