of someone who wanders about with their head in the clouds, scribbling verses on a small notebook. However, most poets are far from the stereotype. Seeking to convey powerful emotional
truth in a minimum of words, a poet, like no other type of writer has the ability to instantly affect its reader, sometimes using fewer than ten words. That is
power. And that power to move people, to speak of a truth that many did not know is at the heart of the poetry of Carl Sandburg. It can be
said that an artist puts a bit of him or herself into every work created. Therefore, understanding a bit about the artist can help the reader, or viewer to understand
the position from which the artist crafted his or her piece. In the case of Carl Sandburg, the Midwest was what he knew the best, and in particular, hard times.
According to most reports, Sandburgs early family life was by all accounts loving but poor. In fact Carl reportedly left school before
finishing to work odd jobs, lay bricks, and do practically anything and everything trying to help support his family. His list of experiences include traveling the rails much like a
hobo before he was twenty, and even served a rotation in the Spanish-American War(Academy of Poets). This experience was what led
him to writing, believe it or not, when a Sandburg met a student who convinced Sandburg to attend school when he left the service. Carl did and it was there
that a professor saw the talent in the young writer. One finds the fact interesting that Sandburg attended college without the benefit of having finished high school. He would never
