was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on American soil. To that end, both sides were determined to win and that their ideology should prevail. The initial plans
of the Union Army had been to simply ride down to the South, flex their powerful Union muscles and in doing so be done with the campaign inside of a
week. The reality of the situation was driven home when they were handed a terrible defeat and had to hand over Ft. Sumter to General Beauregard. The Battle of
Bull Run would change the plans of the Union army somewhat in that they now began to realize that the larger arms that they had were not as portable on
land. This made it difficult to move the lines forward in an even sweep. Likewise, the cannon on the warships were only effective in coastal warring and were of no
help whatsoever inland. Bull Run was significant because of the military strategies which were devised. Interestingly enough, each commander had planned to initiate an attack on the other side
with a feint attack on the enemys right flank and a massed attack on the opposite flank. Had this been done simultaneously, and both been successful in their purpose, the
two armies would have simply pivoted around each other and ended up in each others rear, able to march unopposed to Washington or Richmond, as the case may be. As
it turned out, the general least successful in initiating this movement was the winner. Many of the nearby city dwellers brought picnics and sat up on a hill overlooking the
battlefield, thinking that they Yankees would give the Confederates a sound spanking. What ensued was literal chaos as the Rebels managed to outmaneuver the Union troops. The battle was a
