Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India (Broughton, 2005). The disaster, considered the worst industrial accident in history, directly killed 3,800 people with more succumbing later on to death (Broughton, 2005).
Even more suffered health issues from prolonged exposure to the chemicals that spewed into the air. Estimates of the numbers of people killed within the first few days of the
incident were as high as 10,000 - furthermore, 15,000 to 20,000 premature deaths were reported during the subsequent two decades (Broughton, 2005). Within
hours of the release of the MIC, "the streets of Bhopal were littered with human corpses and the carcasses of buffaloes, cows, dogs and birds" (Broughton, 2005). In the aftermath,
rather than stepping forward and claiming responsibility for its part in the disaster, Union Carbide, headquartered in the United States, put the blame on its Indian partner.
The problem is that the Bhopal incident isnt an isolated one, though it did make headlines because it was by far the worst accident to hit
the pesticide industry. Nor did Union Carbide necessarily endear itself to the general public by trying to dissociate itself from any kind of legal responsibility for the accident. The industry
in which Union Carbide operates, the pesticide industry, is rife with situations such as that which created the Bhopal tragedy. Society is hugely dependant on the industry for many reasons,
not the least of which is to be free from diseases carried by airborne pests. The problem, however, is that, in our dependence on this industry to keep us "healthy,"
