Most people use the word in a most cavalier manner, never stopping to consider the ramifications for using or applying the definition wrongly. Is it possible for there to be one definition of truth? or is it as subjective as ones fingerprint? And if one is able to ascertain the truth, then how does this tend to make one assume or take too much for granted? The saying that The Truth Will Set You Free is really a misnomer. In fact, it can be stated that the truth, even if one discovers it, not only serves to confine and limit a person, but in essence has just the opposite effect of setting one free. Therefore, defining truth, what it is, and what it is not for each individual person on the face of the Earth is not only improbable, but impractical. However, what is possible and practical is the standard guidelines for defining scientific truths as they apply to human beings. The student could state that his/her perspective on truth has been reasonable in that it has measured up to his/her cultural context and upbringing. One can basically state that he is a truthful person if he manages to remain true to the guidelines set forth by his/her family structure, community, and religious beliefs. For example, what is a truth in the United States is not a truth in Iraq. Conversely, what is considered deceitful in Iraq is no more considered wrong than eating without using a fork. Hearsay and rumor must be determined by the student to actually BE hearsay and rumor. For this one must consider the source.
