to mention the entire world. The attacks were the first indication that terrorism wasnt necessarily an "over there" phenomenon, but rather, could happen in our own back yard.
In the weeks following the attack, Americans drew together, unified as they hadnt been before. They turned to the government for solace, crying out for
protection against future such attacks. And the government responded, in part, by passing the Mobilization Against Terrorism Attack (MATA), better known to us these days as the "Patriot Bill" or
the "Patriot Act." American was so terrorized by the attacks, that the Senate approved the Act 98-1 (with full approval of the House of Representatives) (Islam Online, 2001). The Bill
is also known as the acronym -- "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism" (University of North Carolina, 2004). The designation was H.R.
3162, and President George W. Bush signed the Act into law on October 26, 2001 (University of North Carolina, 2004). The amazing thing about this particular Act was that, though
it is 342 pages long, and amends more than 15 statutes, it passed within five weeks of its introduction (University of North Carolina, 2004).
Supporters of the bill claim that it provides more powers to government to try to flush out suspected terrorists and suspected terrorist cells. By combining certain government agencies, they
say, and by not having to go through judicial tricks to try to obtain things like search warrants or wire tapping permission, the supporters point out that law officials can
better find out what terrorists might be saying to one another. The critics, on the other hand, see the bill as something different
