goals were simple: Win the War, protect the country, and revive the economy(Bush). One of the ways in which he proposed to reach these goals was to increase the spending on defense. His rationale behind this increase, one of the largest increases in over eight years, was that the war in Afghanistan proved that high tech weaponry, which destroyed buildings but spared lives, was worth the cost to manufacture them. These goes would be continued as the war on terrorism continued to include the War with Iraq. As forward thinking as his speech made his goals seem, for a large segment of the population, the War on Terrorism had a smack of irony. In their book, The Paradox of Loyalty: An African-American Response to the War on Terrorism, Julianne Malveaux and Regina Green, state that there were important minority voices that were ignored, attacked, overlooked or silenced in the groundswell of nationalism and sensationalism which swept the country immediately following the World Trade Center bombings in New York. This book states that there was a pervasive attitude that if you arent for us, you are against us that ran rampant throughout the nation following 911. Those who opposed the intervention were threatened. One of those voices that were silenced quickly was California Congresswoman, Barbara Lee who received death threats after she had the unmitigated courage to cast the only vote against using force against those involved in the terrorist attacks(Green, Malveaux, 76).
