"The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". This disturbing short story is unique in that it casts the reader immediately as one of the citizens of Omelas and forces the
reader to make a decision: Will you stay? Or Will you Walk Away from Omelas?" The intended purpose, it can be said is to focus attention on the yin/yang relationship
between good and evil, and force the reader to accept that suffering is inevitable, or refusing to believe that, to exact change which will allow a majority of the people
to live happily at the cost of a few. Neither choice, it seems, comes without a price. Omelas is a Utopian society, free from crime, guilt, or ugliness. Externally,
the land is as beautiful as the people, and the people havent a worry or care in the world. In fact, nearly anything they desire can be theirs. This comes
to them courtesy of one small child, who is held in hellish conditions in a cellar. To bring the child into the light of day, they state, would be to
change Omelas forever. Stated that way, then, most of the population is well able to go about their merry, carefree lives without giving a single thought to the child, who
is forced to live in darkness. The child, the reader is told, is about nine or ten years old, lives on a half bowl of cornmeal and grease, and
with the exception of one window, is kept locked up. The only visitors he receives generally end up leaving Omelas, because they are instantly stricken with guilt over the misery
