to be wise and of virtuous nature. Why is this stereotype so prevalent? Where did it come from? What makes it such a useful literary device? Granted, the old man archetype is not the only one that tends to crop up in various forms, literature and culturally. These archetypes are considered to be universal meaning that virtually all cultures understand them, and have certain expectations of their actions. For example, there is the HERO, who is the knight in shining armor type, such as the Dumass, Three Musketeers, or the character of Robin Hood(Archetypes, 2002). The other type is the OUTCAST who has either left the community or was driven, or thrown out (Archetypes, 2002). Depending on the circumstance surrounding his state, the outcast can either be seen sympathetically, such as Connor McCloud in the film, Highlander, or unfavorably as is Golem from Tolkeins, Lord of the Rings. Orwells Animal Farm gives a perfect example of the SCAPEGOAT archetype in the character, Snowball (Archetypes, 2002). The SHREW is of course a sharp tongued woman (usually), such as the wife of Ethan Frome (Archetypes, 2002). Lastly, there are the STAR CROSSED LOVERS, who are epitomized by Shakespeares, Romeo and Juliet (Archetypes, 2002). These basic stereotypes, or archetypes, tend to lend an instant type of history and emotional context for the character, it can be said. The hero, for example, is expected to be victorious at the end of some great trial, the outcast, if viewed sympathetically, is reunited with his family or with another group that accepts him/her, and of course, the old man is instantly recognized as being immensely wise and experienced in the ways of the world.
