employees would be moved overseas, so that huge corporations would take advantage of the cheaper labor (not to mention the great tax incentives some of the countries would offer for
foreign direct investment). To a degree, that doleful prophecy ended up coming true - much of U.S. product manufacture is performed overseas, and as a result, U.S. jobs have been
lost. While one could make the argument that a loss of such jobs would mean that the laborers would have opportunities for better jobs, the dilemma here is that there
have been no solid training programs in place to boost unskilled labor to the next level. None of this impacted white-collar workers,
however, until the late 1990s and early 2000s. Then there were dire mumblings of something called "offshoring," where suddenly some of the more skilled "mind" jobs - in areas such
as financial, IT, marketing and others - were also being sent overseas and again for the same reason. An accountant in India would be far less costly than his or
her counterpart in the U.S. These days, for example, if you call in to somewhere to place an order and youre from
the United States, the chances are excellent that your order will be taken by someone based in either Africa or India. Thats how far weve come with offshoring.
But is offshoring necessarily a bad thing? Are there benefits to moving in this direction? And what is offshoring anyway? How does it differ
