management. The supply chain manager (who had a background in production, engineering and supply) reported to the production manager. But the marketing
manager had functional authority over the supply manager on all specialty products (which were manufactured on a per-order basis, to customer specifications). But the marketing and supply managers werent on
speaking terms because of lack of communication and turf battles when it came to reaching these specialty customers. Meanwhile, the entire supply
chain was actually supply "chains," with "metals" having its own supply chain, "electronics" having it, and so on. Perhaps unsurprisingly, inventories were slow to turn over and orders lost due
to high quoted prices and slow deliveries. A new division manager was appointed to try to clear the situation.
