Katzs controversial claim is that suburbanism isnt working. The suburbs of the past have given way to a multitude of problems including congestion, violence, and a type of social insulation
which has proven to be quite detrimental. In the first section of his book called, Establishing the Urban Pattern, Katz examples numerous case studies where this is the case.
Seaside, for example, was one of the examples of the new urbanism. Quite frankly, after reading the description of the new urbanism the
concept does not seen new at all. Seaside is an all inclusive, but finite community. The entire community is less than than a mile from beginning to end. Inside of
that grid all the basic needs of a family are met. There is a daycare center, school, medical facility, and grocery. All of these necessary businesses and organizations are all
within walking or bicycling distance of each other in a block. Seaside, itself, is just on the periphery of a larger Urban area, but this, claims Katz, is where the
new urbanism is going to form and take best. One of the largest problems in the past is the fact that suburbs were allowed to become mega communities and in
the end, neighbors are more isolated than ever. In the next section, Reconstructing the Urban Fabric, Katz delves into how some of
the existing areas might be revamped. He states that the problems are not going to go away and eventually people are going to demand that their needs be considered when
