Mary Altomare this is because most businesses do not adhere to several very vital steps in creating a vital company. Those companies which they example are those who HAVE managed
to incorporate the vital steps and taken the measures necessary to creating a natural step business atmosphere where change, innovation and tradition all co-exist peacefully and productively. The basic
principles of the Natural Step process is that the overall design needs to be assessed for flaws. Is the business a linear design, offering no way for renewability? What sort
of waste is being generated? And is the company in a whole system mode of thinking? The next era in business, the authors strongly suggest, is going to see a
shifting of the focus away from environmental issues, per se, but to a sustainable development whereby the business uses everything it produces with very little waste, and very little impact
on the environment. Lastly, the authors point out that leadership does make all of the difference. The nine key lessons that the authors suggest are inherent in any successful business
today strongly point toward a strong and forward facing leadership. IKEA, Scandic Hotels, Interface, and Collins Pine, are the four companies which were profiled in The Natural Step. According to
the authors, these companies show that it is possible, practical and productive to learn to integrate sustainable measures into their everyday management. The authors report that these companies have "not
only shown marked improvement in their relationship with the environment at all levels, but have reaped rewards in lowered costs, greater resource productivity, lower environmental impact, and improved staff morale"(Nattrass,
