a journey. The journey can be of the inner or outer variety, and sometimes both are made along the way. In Amy Tans Joy Luck Club (film version) a mythological journey is taken by the four women and their daughters as they search for and discover their own personal destinations. The mythological hero, as in the classic Odysseus, often goes on physical journey. In Amy Tans book, however, the book ends with a physical journey and begins with an emotional and spiritual one. The main character is June Woo, whose mother Suyan woo has died. However, there are very strong secondary characters that make similar journeys as mothers and daughters. Junes mother had belonged to a womens group called the Joy Luck club, which was formed in China and aided the women in making the best out of bad situations. Now, in America, they have formed the group and again and over the years have aided each other. Now, with her mother dead, the older women want June to take her mothers place in their club. June is unsure of the offer. She finds that the offer dredges up feelings of resentment and curiosity, sadness and wonder in her that she did not realize. In essence, then, she is forced to make an inner journey that she was loathe to make. This is often a key component in the mythological heros quest. He or she is forced to make a journey that they are hesitant to make. Symbolism abounds in mythological stories. In the Joy Luck Club, June views the group of women in the club as representing the old traditions of China, which she does not believe in, for the most part.
