The American Dream, then, as portrayed in Tom Wolfes Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and Hunter Thompsons Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas typifies a time in American when the US identity was going through growing pains of its own. Tom Wolfes book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test chronicles the journey of a group of merry pranksters and their leader, Ken Kesey as they attempt to make some sort of social statement about life as they knew it or perceived it. Most of the story revolves around the use of LSD and its mind altering capabilities. From these experiences, and in particular on the various trips (both physical and drug induced) one can see the unfolding of the perspective of the American Dream. The myth of the American Dream seems to be a subtle current which keeps the group continuing forward. Just around the next bend, just in the next city, they will find what they have been looking for. Kesey is certain that salvation is obtainable, just as many Americans believed that the good life was only a little more elbow grease. If only one worked harder and longer then one would get ahead. This was one of many prevailing myths of the time. Keseys belief was that LSD was going to usher in the alternate reality and spirituality that mankind had been missing. He preached it with such conviction that he had a massive following. A lot of people bought into it, too. A lot of people bought into the false idea of the American Dream, as well.
