that the characters are a personification of various moral qualities such as charity or faith, or abstract concepts like life or death. Very few of these Morality plays survived the
Middle Ages. One of the surviving plays, and the one most often performed, is called, Everyman. Perhaps it has survived because its themes are still pertinent to the human condition
and the way in which man relates to the idea of death. Another characteristic of the morality play is that the hero, which is generally an average person, has
certain weaknesses which are exploited by some diabolic force. In order to combat this attack the ordinary hero may call to his side such virtuous warriors as mercy and justice.
In the morality play, then, one can see the early beginnings of the move away from sacred to the secular. The play, Everyman, speaks directly about death and about living
ones life to the fullest extent. As such, then, one of the major themes of this play is that if a person has many talents and abilities that one should
not squander them. Everyman comes to realize this when Death knocks on his door. Everyman is not ready for Death, hadnt even realized that he was dropping by. There were
so many things that Everyman had hoped to have done by the time Death arrived. As it is, Death has arrived and Everyman must make some decisions. "O Death, thou
come when I had thee least in mind...I must say, Death gives no warning!"(Fort, Kates, 26). Everyman tries to stall Death so that he can figure out some way that
he will not have to go with Death. He goes to friends and family and of all of those he can only persuade Good Deeds to go along with him.
