that applies to just about everyone. So it is with The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This poem addresses the problem of morality, the consequences of giving in to baser human emotions and of the punishment that mankind brings on himself. Of these themes, it has to be said that the consequences of disregarding nature and life in general, is the greatest truth of them all. At the beginning of the poem, three men are making their way to a wedding when they run into a very old sailor. As they pass by him, the old sailor grabs one of them by the arm. As the young man demands to be let go, he notices something wild in the sailors eye and it intrigues the young man. As the sailor starts to tell his tale, the wedding guest becomes so enthralled with the telling that he almost completely forgets that he has come to see the wedding. While out at sea an Albatross becomes the good luck symbol for the sailors. However, the Mariner confesses to the wedding guest that he shot the bird with his crossbow. At first, he states, the sailors were furious with him for shooting the bird of good luck, but then later, when the fog lifted, they decided that it had been the bird that caused the fog and they praised the Mariner for seeing through it all. Then, he states, they sailed into the doldrums, where the ship was as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean(Coleridge, 2003). The sailors turned on him, he states, and determined that his act toward the Albatross had been wicked and that he must be punished.
