others. However, there seem to be some constants between many philosophers and authors throughout the years. William Golding (Lord of the Flies), et al, feel that there is purpose in
living the moral life and that there is a way to determine between that which is good and that which is evil. William Golding, in the introductory notes to his
famous book, The Lord of the Flies, states that the major concept of the book is to show that the problems which are found in society are a direct result
of the defects in human nature. He lambastes the notion that society can ever be shaped by any sort of political system no matter how logical or respectable. In essence,
then, he is stating that the ethical nature of a person is what determines the culture or make-up of a community, not the government. When mankind first determined that there
was strength in numbers, one of the first questions that arose was that of who was in charge? Since that time mankind has argued this question every day of his/her
life. Pojman offers that man made a sacrifice when he determined to band together with others of his own kind. Morality became necessary in order to provide for human flourishing,
to allow him to survive. Pojman draws a distinction between ethics (or morality), on the one hand, and etiquette, law, and religion and on the other. "Each employs evaluative
terms and language-words like `right, `wrong, `obligatory, `good, `bad, `evil, `ought, and `should.5(a) Moreover, each is essentially tied to action, and, indeed, tied to the concept we have of
