sentencing policies in the United States. One author, Steinbock, offers the dilemma of the common thief gaining a harsh sentencing while someone found guilty of negligent homicide manages to escape
jail time all together. Stiffer penalties for various crimes differ from one state to the next. In this age of swift communication and high access computers, there is no reason
that there couldnt be a standardization of the penal codes and minimum sentencing federally. Steinbock offers that there is something grossly wrong with a system that prosecutes the average
non-violent criminal with harsher sentences than those whose crimes result in the taking of a life. For example, someone who climbs into a car and is attempting to operate a
vehicle under the influence of alcohol should be charged as someone who is caught in the act of committing a crime. If this person manages to get on the road
and kills someone because of his drunken state, then this act of violence is no different than someone who has murdered someone with a gun, or a knife. The result
is the same: someone has been killed at the hands of another. Steinbock bristles at the idea that one form of murder should be viewed with less blame and
guilt than another. The drunk driver had a choice just as someone holding a gun has a choice. The drunk driver can take the responsibility for his actions and refuse
