true that King Louis ruled the longest of nearly any monarch, he also plunged his own country into such debt that it broke the backs and spirit of his countrymen,
an act which may have ushered in the French Revolution. Given the entire scope of his reign, was Louis a successful leader, did he achieve all that he set out
to achieve, and in the end was he any better than the rest of the monarch who had ruled before him? Louis would appear to have been supremely ambitious. And
ambition of such magnitude inevitably leads to war. In fact, it led to four wars. In the first war, Louis hoped to recapture all lands that had ever been under
French rule. It can be said that he was successful in his endeavor, but his aggressiveness caused other countries to become alarmed that he may have expansionist ideas that included
their territories. Covert alliances were made against him. However, it can be said that King Louis was a very shrewd man. His military was second to none at the time.
With this finely honed military machine, Louis was poised to achieve his goals. At the time, according to Beiks book, Louis XIV and Absolutism, France was the most populous country
in Europe. Most of the other countries were busy fighting and maintaining borders, or were battling internal disorder from warring minorities. France was large, and it had a very land-hungry
monarch. Louis, Beik infers, wanted to be counted among the great rulers in his countrys history. He did achieve the title, "Sun King" and was eventually titled, Louis, the Great.
