tale that sticks out in their memory, one that is their favorite. Generally speaking, most would probably choose The Knights Tale or the Wife of Baths stories. This paper submits
that the Millers tale, while not the most intriguing or exciting of stories tends to have a quieting effect on the reader, preparing them for the next wild tale.
At the very beginning of the Prologue to the Tale, Chaucer warns the reader that the tale is about to be a bawdy one as the Miller is completely drunk
and loud. In fact, he tells his tale out of turn, but because he is being so loud, the rest of the travelers agree to let him have his say.
"The miller is a lout, as youre aware; So was the reeve, and so were many
more. They both told bawdy stories. Then beware, And do not lay upon me all the
blame, Or take in earnest what is meant in fun(Chaucer 81). As the tale goes the Miller claims that he will quiet
the Knights tale. In actuality what he probably meant was that he will make the Knights tale look tame in comparison to his own. The travelers have a bet going
to see who can tell the best tale during their journeys. The best teller of tales will get a dinner paid for by the other travelers. So, the Miller is
inspired, so to speak, to attempt to best the Knights tale. He intends to do so by telling a tale that is racy. The tale is that of an
